Optometrist at Walsh Opticians made a life changing discovery!

In early July, 2022, an Optometrist at CJM Walsh Ophthalmic Opticians made a life changing discovery.

Alexandra has been a qualified optician since 2021 and has worked at the practice since September 2022.

Upon hearing from one of her regular patients, the team recognised an urgency was required from the symptoms outlined over the phone and brought the patient in for a same day emergency appointment.

Once arrived at the practice, Alexandra was able to provide a thorough eye exam and recognised a retinal condition that was still within the very early stages.

The patient was then urgently referred to a hospital to receive further treatment for the Temporal Retinal Tear found within the patient’s eye by Alexandra during tests conducted at the practice.

This was treated on the same day, saving the patients vision in heroic fashion. What makes it more special, is that the patient already relies solely on this one eye for their vision.

Alexandra said: “It’s so rewarding to be able to identify a condition such as this in a patient and by a prompt referral ensure they are seen and treatment completed before the tear worsens potentially becoming sight threatening and life changing!”

As you can imagine, the patient was extremely thankful and visited the practice personally to thank Alexandra with a beautiful bunch of flowers.

The Ophthalmologist at the hospital also called the practice to personally recognise the importance of Alexandra’s expertise and thorough time spent with the patient to investigate and triage their condition; picking up the condition at such early stages has had a huge beneficial impact.

The entire team at Walsh Opticians demonstrated an immense amount of care and genuine concern for their patient, as they do for all their patients.

It takes a particularly fantastic team to work together along every step, from answering the patients call, triaging and acknowledging her urgent symptoms, and acting fast and accordingly.

All of this was achieved whilst maintaining a high standard of both professionalism and reassurance to ensure the patient felt safe and cared for.

Emily Ware said: “As a practice manager, this makes me extremely proud of Alexandra, and our team!”
